Tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and herbs growing in patio containers

You do not need a big yard to grow vegetables. A sunny balcony, patio, or doorstep can support a productive container garden when you match each crop to the right pot.

Check your light

Most fruiting vegetables, including tomatoes and peppers, do best with at least six hours of direct sun. Leafy greens and some herbs can manage with less. Watch the space through a full day before choosing plants.

Choose containers and mix

Every container needs drainage holes. Use a lightweight, high-quality potting mix rather than dense garden soil. Give larger crops such as tomatoes a roomy container and support their stems with a cage or stake. Lettuce, herbs, and compact pepper varieties are approachable first crops.

Water and feed consistently

Check moisture frequently: pots dry faster than garden beds, especially during summer heat. Water the mix thoroughly when its surface begins to dry, and let excess water drain. Follow the fertilizer label because nutrients can wash out of containers over time.

Start small

Begin with two or three pots, learn how quickly your space dries, and add crops in the next season. Check local frost dates before moving warm-season plants outside.
